Watch RBC Heritage winner Matt Fitzpatrick look way too calm as he stuffs this approach shot to inches for victory
Having watched Jordan Spieth burn the edge with potential walk-off birdie putts on the first two playoff holes at the RBC Heritage, Matt Fitzpatrick knew he couldn’t give the tournament’s defending champion any more chances. Not if the 28-year-old Englishman wanted to claim his second career PGA Tour title on Sunday and fulfill a childhood dream of winning at Harbour Town.
Luckily as Fitzpatrick stood over his second shot on the third playoff hole—the third time he had play Harbour Town’s famed 18th in less than an hour—he was more than comfortable with what he was facing: 186 yards to the hole, wind at his back, tournament in the balance. And the result was a shot that will go down in tournament lore:
When Spieth’s approach wound up 33 feet from the hole, and he couldn’t make his birdie, Fitzpatrick closed out a victory.
How did Fitzpatrick get so dialed in? We’ll let him explain:
“The first playoff hole had 179 and hit a 9-iron about 10 yards past the hole. The third playoff hole we had 186 and his 9-iron two inches short. For me it was a perfect yardage. Billy was delighted with the yardage. Said he didn’t have to do much caddieing. It was a great shot.”
