Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 American Express

January 22, 2023

The easiest way for Jon Rahm, a man very much frustrated by how slow the Official World Golf Ranking reflects his recent play, to assure he jumps to No. 1 would be to win every tournament he starts. And if that sounds preposterous, well so does the fact that the 28-year-old Spaniard entered the week having recorded eight top-10 finishes in nine worldwide starts since last August, including three wins in his last five starts—and still only sits at just No. 4 in the ranking.

Yet come Sunday at The American Express, Rahm once more took things into his own hands, shooting a final-round 68 at PGA West’s Stadium Course in La Quinta, Calif., to beat rookie Davis Thompson by one shot and claim his second PGA Tour title in as many starts after winning two weeks ago at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Given that Rahm started the day tied with a 23-year-old playing in just his seventh event as a PGA Tour member, his prospects for victory seemed reasonable high. In his favor was the fact that the second of his now nine career PGA Tour titles came at this event in 2018 (shooting a 22-under 266). Yet surprisingly while this was the eighth time Rahm had been tied for 54-hole lead or held it outright, he had only converted two of them previously into wins.

Originally private, the Stadium Course (the original 18 at PGA West) was among the rota of courses for the old Bob Hope Desert Classic, until some pros, objecting to its difficulty, petitioned to remove it. (It’s now back.) It's Pete Dye at his rambunctious best, with a finish mimicking his later design at TPC Sawgrass: a gambling par-5 16th (called San Andreas Fault), a short par-3 17th to an island green and an intimidating par-4 18th with water all the way to the green.

This was Thompson’s first time atop a PGA Tour leaderboard with 18 holes to play, and had the former University of Georgia All-American pulled out the win, it would be a financially momentous accomplishment. Thompson’s career earnings on tour to date were $611,871, so even the runner-up check he earned after closing with a three-under 69 ($872,000) still surpassed that.

Rahm, meanwhile, grabbed the first-place prize money payout of $1.44 million from an overall purse of $8 million.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer who made the cut this week at the American Express. Come back shortly after the finish at PGA West’s Stadium Course on Sunday and we’ll update the list with individual names and dollar figures.
